Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Kieran Trippier as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targets right-back competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Wan-Bissaka has started all but two of the Red Devils’ games this season, with the 23-year-old a consistent performer for Solskjaer’s side.
But United boss Solskjaer has few other options as cover for the defender, with Tim Fosu-Mensah the club’s only other senior right-back.
And the manager is weighing up a swoop for Atletico Madrid and England ace Trippier, according to The Telegraph.
The publication reports that the Norwegian is likely to wait until the summer to swoop for Trippier rather than making a move in the January transfer window.
The 30-year-old will enter the final year of his Atletico contract following the end of this season – so it might be the best time to land him for a knockdown price.
Trippier is in his second season with the La Liga giants after joining from Tottenham in a surprise £20million switch last year.
As well as providing competition and cover for Wan-Bissaka, Trippier would offer Solskjaer a different option on the flanks.
The former Spurs man is more of an attacking full-back than Wan-Bissaka, whose one-on-one defending has been impressive this season.
The United man showed his worth when he prevented West Ham from doubling their lead in the first half of Saturday’s Premier League clash at Upton Park.
With his side trailing to a goal from Tomas Soucek, Wan-Bissaka made a hash of a clearance giving Jarrod Bowen a clear run at goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
But the defender recovered brilliantly to deny the pacy Hammers forward – and it proved a timely intervention, as United fought back in the second half to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.
The win saw the Red Devils briefly climb into the Premier League’s top four, although on Sunday they were pushed back down to fifth following Leicester’s win over Sheffield United.
Portuguese right-back Diogo Dalot is also on United’s books, but he is currently on a season-long loan with Serie A leaders AC Milan.
