A collective of experts from various backgrounds is of the opinion that Quebec should take advantage of the holiday season to impose a new lockdown in order to break the second wave of COVID-19.

These some 80 experts from the fields of health and the economy, among others, asked themselves “what can be done to minimize the risks to the quality of life of people”, “remove the pressure on the health network ”and“ act on the economy ”.
The researcher at the Research Chair in Taxation and Public Finance Luc Godbout explains that the holiday season is opportune for confinement.
“As long as you don’t have gatherings in the red zones, why not go further […] There are a lot of professions where people are already staying at home, the children are staying at home. Why not take the opportunity to break this second wave, ”he said.
According to Mr. Godbout, it is better to act sooner than later.
“When you look at what’s going on elsewhere, when there has been no containment, the situation deteriorates. And containment could only come later. So we have the choice to act sooner, rather than act later, “analyzed the tax expert.
The rising trend in the number of daily cases suggests that banning Christmas gatherings will not be enough, believes Luc Godbout.
“We have already been in restricted confinement since being in the red zone and that does not seem to be enough. What is most worrying is when you look at the increase in the number of cases in hospital, “said the expert.
The collective has not defined a precise framework for the containment it is proposing. He prefers to leave this decision to the government.
