Jurgen Klopp gives Oxlade-Chamberlain update as Liverpool injuries begin to ease

Jurgen Klopp has provided a positive update on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is looking “really promising” as he steps up his rehabilitation at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has not featured for the Reds since he suffered a serious knee injury during their pre-season camp in Austria.

The 27-year-old’s absence has been sorely felt in central midfield, where Liverpool have also seen Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, James Milner and Thiago Alcantara succumb to injuries.

Klopp’s options in this position have been further limited by Fabinho’s stint at centre-back, as the natural midfielder continues to fill in at centre-back due to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez’s injuries.

Oxlade-Chamberlain scored eight goals in 43 appearances last season

The Reds boss was delighted at the prospect of welcoming Oxlade-Chamberlain back to first-team action soon – though the clash with Wolves will come too soon for the former Arsenal star.

“Ox looks really promising, but that’s obviously [not for now],” Klopp said ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture.

“He’s doing a lot of stuff, he’s warming up with the team now, some ball work, a lot of stuff.

“But we will develop that now over the next few days, and then we will see from which moment on it makes sense to throw him in. He’s not too far away.”

After a catastrophic start to the season in which 15 first-team stars have suffered injuries or tested positive for coronavirus, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel for Liverpool.

Klopp hopes to have right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and midfielder Keita back for the encounter with Wolves after the pair suffered hamstring injuries last month.

Elsewhere, captain Henderson and left-back Andy Robertson were able to take part in training despite suffering knocks in the 1-0 win over Ajax on Tuesday.
