Ederson makes bold claim that he is best penalty taker in Man City squad

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has insisted that he is the best player at taking penalties in the whole team.

City have had their troubles from the spot recently, with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan, Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne all missing efforts since last November.

Ederson has taken set pieces for previous Portuguese sides Ribeirao and Rio Ave in the past.

And speaking ahead of his side’s Champions League game against FC Porto, Ederson admitted he still practises scoring as well as saving penalties – and is clearly confident in his ability.

“I don’t train much free-kicks,” he said. “I trained penalties and when I played for Riberao I took some free-kicks but that is in the past now.

Ederson thinks he is the best penalty taker at Manchester City

“That is in the past and we have some very good free kick takers. Penalties, I am the best penalty taker but I am not chosen to take them.”

“The most important thing is that we score goals and win the game.”

Guardiola has been asked previously about the chances of Ederson taking a penalty one day, but claimed it would be disrespectful to his opponents to allow his goalkeeper to do so.

When questioned about it 2018, he replied: “No, that is not going to happen.

“Because he’s a goalkeeper, there are other players who can take one, respect for the opponents, respect for the competitions.

Kevin de Bruyne missed his penalty against Liverpool earlier this month

“One situation is a friendly, for a shoot-out, maybe he can do it, but during the game, no.”

De Bruyne missed his side’s most recent spot-kick when he dragged his effort wide of the post in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool earlier this month.

He had managed to convert his previous five attempts in a row, however, and looks set to continue as first choice taker for now.
