Two armed men ‘take two women hostage inside a Queens home they tried to rob after assaulting the resident,’ police say

  • New York Police Department responded to reported hostage situation in Queens
  • Two men have surrendered after being holed up inside for more than five hours 
  • Officers arrived at home in the Richmond Hill section of Queens at around 9pm 
  • Woman carrying infant told officers she was assaulted by two armed men 
  • She said the men tried to rob her home and barricaded themselves inside 
  • The woman also said that two other women were being held against their will
  • A few hours later, NYPD said that the two hostages were freed from the home 

Two armed men who allegedly attempted to burglarize a home in the New York City borough of Queens late on Tuesday have surrendered after several people held against their will were freed in tense hostage negotiations.

The alleged home invaders were arrested on 125th Street in South Richmond Hill at 2am after a five-hour hostage scenario.

The New York Police Department were still negotiating with the men after midnight  despite them having released two hostages.

Law enforcement officials received a report at around 9pm of a possible attempted burglary of a home near Liberty Avenue and 125th Street.

When police arrived at the home, officers saw a woman with a baby standing outside. The woman told the officers that two armed men assaulted her and barricaded themselves inside the home while holding at least two others against their will

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a woman with a baby. The woman told the officers that there were armed people in her home and that she had been assaulted.

Police said two people were inside the house and were being held against their will.

Just before 11pm, the two hostages were released.

‘We had two additional people that were in the home that were released, an elderly woman in her 80s and another female, possibly in her 50s, recently released,’ an official told WCBS-TV at the time.

‘We are still in communication with the people inside, and we’ll be here until the situation is resolved.’

The NYPD released a statement after midnight on Wednesday local time saying that officers were continuing to negotiate with the individuals inside the home

One of the women was taken to a hospital in an ambulance.

Just after midnight, police said that there were no hostages inside and that the suspects remained in the home. 

Just before 2am police said two male suspects surrendered and they were placed in custody. 

Police have not identified the men or announced what charges they are facing and an investigation is ongoing.
