Beachclub owner Olivier Primeau refuses to get tomatoes thrown because he chose an English name for his new restaurant banner.
“This is such an easy excuse for defenders of the French language: ‘Change the name of your restaurants’. I have one of my restaurants called Kampai. Are you going to come see me and say, “Change your name”? Asks Mr. Primeau, owner of Slice Gang Pizza.
Yesterday, The newspaper found a poll showing that 58% of Montrealers between the ages of 18 and 34 say it’s not important to be approached in French in downtown stores.
However, for Mr. Primeau, whom many consider to be the king of social networks in Quebec, this debate on language must be taken with a grain of salt.
In recent months, the 35-year-old entrepreneur, who had the idea to launch his own banner of street pizza after a bike ride in Old Montreal, has drawn the wrath of his admirers.
Just 24 hours after announcing his project on social media, more than 445 people contacted him to open a franchise, but his Anglo name, Slice Gang Pizza, has stuck in the throats of some.
“I find the battles badly chosen. I am 100% for the preservation of French in Quebec. I find that super important. It’s our first language, and it has to stay that way, but I think English is poorly accepted, ”laments the businessman.
According to him, even though within his companies, the language of work is still French, entrepreneurs must be bilingual to break through.
“I’m going outside of Quebec with my banner. I understand the world can be upset, but is that really the problem? Is it because of a restaurant name that Quebec is going to lose its French? »He adds.
Mr. Primeau was also irritated yesterday by the debate over the name given to his box of frozen poutine, Pause Poutine Time, which has just arrived at Costco.
“I changed it because it said ‘Poutine Every Day’. I had a few complaints, and we changed it immediately. The “Time” is bigger because Costco was asking for it because they have more stores in English, ”he says.
When asked what he thinks of the fact that Cirque du Soleil or Couche-Tard have been able to succeed internationally with a name in French, Mr. Primeau nuances and replies tit for tat that “Couche-Tard, in outside of Quebec, it’s Circle K ”.
” I m 35 years old. I come from Sainte-Martine. I started speaking English when I bought the Beachclub. I had to become bilingual very quickly, “continues the friend of international stars.
