Former French international Bixente Lizarazu has urged Antoine Griezmann to leave Barcelona as his torrid time at the Nou Camp continues.
The 29-year-old attacking midfielder signed in a £105m deal from Atletico Madrid last summer, but has so far failed to show his best form at Barcelona, scoring just 11 goals in 42 La Liga appearances.
His up-and-down spell was summed up in the 5-2 win over Real Betis at the weekend when he scored but missed a penalty, while it has also been claimed that he does not get on with Lionel Messi.
Speaking in an interview with France Football , Lizarazu said the best thing was for Griezmann to move on for the sake of his career.
“You can see that Griezmann is not happy on the pitch,” he said.
“To play well, a footballer must feel supported. There must be a relationship of trust with the coach and teammates. I don’t see that.
“He does not find his place with Leo Messi. They don’t play together. The solution is to leave.
“You have to be able to say enough. Frankly, is it worth insisting. The environment is not good for him.
“The most important thing is to find a better environment to develop. Barcelona’s mess is too much .
“It is better to leave that so as not to continue falling, to go to a stable club where the coach wants you.
“Where? I don’t know, but it must be a great club. He will not enjoy staying at Barça.”
Lizarazu’s words come after Griezmann’s former advisor Eric Olhats slammed Messi for, in his view, not making the player feel welcome at Barcelona.
“His (Messi’s) attitude has been deplorable, he made him feel that,” Olhats said. “I’ve always heard Antoine say there’s no problem with Messi, but never the other way around.
“It’s the club that’s sick, not him. Last year, when Antoine arrived, Messi didn’t talk to him, didn’t pass him the ball. He created a real trauma for a more than negative adaptation.”
It is not clear where Griezmann could go if he does leave, but he has been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool in the past.
