The Independent Investigations Bureau (BEI) intends to shed light on an event that occurred on Saturday in a police station in Quebec, where a suicidal man allegedly inflicted serious injuries on himself in his cell.
The Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ) says it was called to intervene on Saturday morning, around 10:20 am, with a young woman who allegedly made suicidal comments. When the police arrived at the scene, they found him in distress and in the company of a man.
While the woman was receiving the necessary treatment, officers reportedly began questioning the man. They realized that the latter was wanted under two warrants.
Also according to the BEI press release, which quotes the SPVQ version, the police officers arrested him. Subsequently, he in turn made suicidal comments on his way to the police station.
He was then placed in cell “with the necessary precautions”, according to what the SPVQ told the BEI.
However, after a routine check at around 1:05 p.m., the police reportedly discovered the lifeless man in his cell.
He eventually regained consciousness during transport to hospital and is currently “out of danger,” the statement from the Bureau of Independent Investigations read.
Seven BEI investigators have been assigned to the case, and they will be assisted by the Sûreté du Québec.
Anyone who believes they have information about this event should contact the BEI through its website.
