A Mexican assures that her deportation was accelerated to prevent her from telling that there was a plan to remove her uterus without consent while being held in ICE Detention Center in Irwin, Georgia.

Jaromy Floriano Navarro spoke Monday on the Democracy Now! from Aguascalientes. The woman was deported on September 16, days after she refused a hysterectomy, and when a nurse reported that this practice was being carried out at the Detention Center.

Floriano Navarro, who has been in the Detention Center since October 2019, said that he visited Dr. Mahendra Amin’s office at the Irwin County Jail after experiencing severe colic. The woman also had a vaginal infection.

According to the testimony, Dr. Amin’s diagnosis it was that I had a cyst and that for this reason it had to be operated.

“I was very scared. I did not know what a cyst was or how it formed. He did not explain any of the above to me. He did not care. I just wanted to do the surgery, ”said the woman.

The doctor gave him pain medicine and applied a Depo-Provera birth control shot, on the grounds that it would help him with the cyst. Floriano Navarro had vaginal bleeding for a month. The immigrant said they continued to take her to Amin until July. In all visits he told her that he should undergo surgery, although without explaining what it was about.

The woman was going to be operated on on July 31, without being clear about the matter, but a test for COVID-19 showed he had antibodies to the disease so the surgery was postponed to August 14. Floriano Navarro had missed the deadline for his appeal by then.

The immigrant refused the procedure when the surgery date arrived as she understood what it was about.

“They wanted to remove my belly”said Floriano Navarro, who returned to see Dr. Amin the day before she was deported. “I was angry. He said, ‘Why didn’t you have surgery? Who told you to say no? ‘I replied’ Excuse me? That was a misunderstanding. How was I supposed to say yes? I am not going to have surgery that I am not aware of‘”.

On the same show, New York Democratic Congressman Adriano Espaillat insisted that a thorough investigation be conducted to find out if hysterectomies are a systemic issue at ICE.

Floriano Navarro aspires to return to the United States, the country where he grew up.
