Chicken feet are pieces that, although they do not provide meat, many people say that they give the broth more flavor. Some even claim that legs can offer multiple health benefits. We will see how much is true.
Chicken feet consist primarily of connective tissue: skin, cartilage, tendons, and bones.
Healhline magazine notes that thanks to its high collagen content, chicken feet can:
- Improve the health and appearance of skin
- Help reduce Joint pain
- Help prevent bone loss
- Promote the health of heart
Studies and research cited by the journal verify the benefits mentioned when consuming collagen through supplements designed so that this protein can be better absorbed.
Although they contain collagen, neither the bone broth nor the chicken feet offer you the aforementioned benefits, the logical reason is that the collagen that is consumed in the diet breaks up and these small parts (amino acids) do not come back together in the same way who entered.
So the Harvard Medical School points out that foods with collagen like bone broth:
They do not relieve joint pain. Arthritis is the result of the loss of collagen, which cushions the joints. Collagen in food is not absorbed as it is. Collagen does not go directly to your knees, hips, or other joints.
They do not make the skin firmer and smoother. Just as collagen from food is not transported directly to the joints, it also does not enter the skin.
They do not improve digestion. Bone broths contain gelatin, which is said to aid digestion, although there is little evidence for its effectiveness.
Bone broths do not make bones strong. Bones will not build bone or prevent osteoporosis. They release very little calcium even when cooked over low heat.
Benefits of chicken broth
The soup or chicken broth (with or without bones) has been popularly regarded as comforting and even beneficial for recovery after surgery or illness.
According to Harvard School of Public Health there is no scientific evidence that chicken vegetable soup accelerates recovery. However, it states that it’s a worthwhile preparation for several reasons:
Provides various nutrients involved in the immune system: proteins and zinc from chicken, vitamin A from carrots, vitamin C from celery and onions; and antioxidants from onions and herbs.
It’s a great way to have a filling meal without a ton of calories. People who start a meal with a bowl of soup consume fewer calories overall.
Provides fluids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration.
Is pleasant for the stomach when you don’t have much of an appetite.
Then the chicken feet will not offer you the unique benefits attributed to collagen, but they can be a nice addition to chicken broth that together create a very nutritious and healthy dish for your body in general.
