After almost a year of waiting and a controversy over the first choices of new names that would give the city its new identity, the die is finally cast.
“This is a historic moment […] With a name like Val-des-Sources, I am convinced that our future will be prosperous ”, declared Mayor Hugues Grimard, during an extraordinary meeting of the city council behind closed doors, last night, at the municipality’s library. .
The administration of the now defunct Asbestos had announced its intention to break away from the negative toponym meaning asbestos in English in November 2019.
In the end, 2,796 citizens, or 48.2% of those eligible to vote, went to the polls between October 14 and 18. Val-des-Sources obtained the favor of citizens to the tune of 51.5%, in the third round.
L’Azur-des-Cantons, Jeffrey-sur-le-Lac, Larochelle, Phénix, and Trois-Lacs were the other toponyms retained to replace Asbestos.
The name change process has therefore begun. Several steps will have to be taken before formalizing everything. In particular, citizens will have another opportunity to oppose it.
“In the best of all worlds, we would like to be able to officially announce the name change in December […], it would be a nice Christmas present, ”said Mr. Grimard.
