Much controversy has generated internationally the case of two minors who live in a village on the island of Lombok, in Indonesia, who have been forced to marry for breaking one of the local regulations.
Suhaimi, 15, and Nur Herawati, 12, reportedly had to marry after the girl’s parents claimed they had violated a local custom that prohibits young couples from dating after dark, and these teenagers were seen walking together around 7:30 p.m.
This law is part of the customs and traditions of the culture of the Sasak people, where it is also customary for young people to steal their brides before their wedding is celebrated.
Despite the fact that the wedding between the two teenagers did not receive approval from the Office of Religious Affairs, which legally sanctions marriages in Indonesia, the minors now live together as husband and wife in the home of Suhaimi’s parents, who, by their part, they tried to avoid marriage. However, his initiative was rejected by the girl’s relatives.
