Republican Senators Line Up to Support Trump in Supreme Court Battle | The NY Journal

President Donald Trump said Monday that he would announce at the end of the week his candidate to fill the vacancy that remains on the Supreme Court after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Trump seemed sure of have the support of Republican senators, who have a majority in the upper house, but their party colleagues are indecisive in public. Republicans have to choose between vote for your nominee before the November elections or wait for voters to confirm or reject a second Trump term.

The most prominent Republican senators agree on elect the new judge before the end of the year. The president has been quick to say that he will announce his election on Friday or “probably Saturday,” after Judge Ginsburg’s funeral, and pressures his allies to vote before the elections in which, according to The New York Times, It would be the fastest confirmation in the Supreme Court in modern history.

Senators will have only 38 days to support or not support Trump’s election, since it does not seem likely that they will want to do it days before an election in which some of them their tenure in the Senate and the Republican Party are at stake for control of the Upper House.

Some Republican senators have called for caution in the face of such a fast-paced schedule, even if they have the necessary votes.

The president was encouraged to rush the election process after Senators Charles E. Grassley of Iowa and Cory Gardner of Colorado announced that they would support moving forward with the election. Grassley and Gardner were two of the three Republicans who they could have objected as they refused to consider President Barack Obama’s proposal nine months before the 2016 elections.
