Drew Barrymore’s ‘biggest pet peeve’ with Scream – why she didn’t take lead role

Drew Barrymore has revealed what her “biggest pet peeve” was with the script of Scream and why it made her pick a smaller role.
The 45-year-old actress was originally cast for the lead role as Sidney Prescott in the American 1996 horror film Scream which follows a killer terrorizing a group of high school teens as part of a cruel game.
But Drew fought to play the role of Casey Becker instead, who was the first character to be brutally murdered by the serial killer only 12 minutes into the film.
Drew was joined by the likes of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who will be returning to our screens in 2022 for Scream 5.
Drew revealed all on Hot Ones , a YouTube series which describes itself as “The show with hot questions and even hotter wings”, where celebrities are asked questions we all want to know the answer to.
She said: “In the horror film genre, my biggest pet peeve was that I always knew the main character was going to be slugging through at the end, but was going to creak by and make it.
“What I wanted to do is to take that comfort zone away.
“I asked if I could be Casey Becker so that we would establish this rule does not apply in this film.”
Shooting for Scream 5 is set to begin later this month.
Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette will be returning to our screens alongside new cast members Jack Quaid, YOU star Jenny Ortega, and 13 Reasons Why star Dylan Minnette.
Variety reports that filming will take place on the fifth instalment of the franchise at a studio in Wilmington, in North Carolina, USA.
