Liverpool transfer round-up: Brewster and Wijnaldum stance after interest

[ad_1]

Liverpool have had a relatively quiet transfer window so far as they go about defending their Premier League title.

The Reds have added just one senior player to their ranks, with Kostas Tsimikas joining from Olympiacos to provide competition to Andy Robertson at left-back, and the Greek international was not involved in the opening league game after testing positive for Coronavirus.

It has been maintained that the champions are keen to sell in order to buy, with Jurgen Klopp’s men shying away from big-money deals, but there has been talk of one significant exit which could help free up further funds.

We’ve got the latest on a potential attacking departure, as well as updates on the future of two midfielders – one currently at Anfield and another linked with a move there over the summer.

Rhian Brewster has been linked with a Liverpool exit

Sheffield United ‘agree fee’ over permanent move for Reds striker

There has been no shortage of clubs linked with Rhian Brewster over the summer, with multiple reported approaches to take the Liverpool striker on loan.

However, it has recently been suggested that the Reds could be open to letting the England under-21 man leave permanently, albeit with a buy-back clause inserted.

Brewster scored 11 goals in 22 games on loan at Swansea City last season, and featured in the Community Shield, but was not involved for Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Leeds United.

Liverpool got their title defence off to a shaky start as they edged out a seven-goal thriller against Leeds.

In terms of transfers. The Reds remain keen on Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara, but Georginio Wijnaldum continues to be linked with Barcelona. There’s a lot to keep track of.

The ECHO reports that the club are open to selling Brewster “if the conditions are right”, and makes reference to reports from Fourth Official that a bid has been “accepted” for the striker.

A fee in the region of £20-25million had been mooted for the 20-year-old, though nothing more substantial has emerged at the time of writing.

Reds still yet to make direct contact with Bayern over Thiago

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago throughout the transfer window, but a swoop for the Spanish international appears to be no closer.

Uli Hoeness, Bayern’s honorary president, has claimed there has been no contact between the clubs, and reports in Germany suggest this is because communications have all come through an intermediary.

According to Bild (via Sport Witness ), the Reds have used an unnamed intermediary to reach out to Hasan Salihamidzic, Bayern’s sporting director.

Liverpool are yet to make ‘direct contact’ with Bayern Munich over Thiago Alcantara

The report suggests Liverpool and Bayern remain at an impasse over the midfielder, who is in the final year of his contract, with regards to the fee.

Bayern are believed to want €30m for the 29-year-old, who joined from Barcelona in 2013 and was part of the starting line-up as Hansi Flick’s side beat Paris Saint-Germain to win the 2019/20 Champions League.

Liverpool not “actively looking to sell” Wijnaldum

Part of the reason for the Thiago hold-up may be that the Reds have no plans to add a senior midfielder to their ranks unless one of their current squad members moves on.

Gini Wijnaldum has been considered the most likely to leave, due to his contract situation, but the Athletic reports that the club are not actively looking to move the player on.

Liverpool are not looking to sell Gini Wijnaldum

The Dutch international, who played the full 90 minutes against Leeds United on Saturday, has just one year left on his contract at Anfield, prompting talk of a reunion with his former international coach Ronald Koeman at Barcelona.

The same report reveals Wijnaldum has given Liverpool no indication he wants to leave before the October transfer deadline, suggesting the main barrier to the midfielder signing a new deal concerned the length of any contract extension.

Wijnaldum has played more than 140 Premier League games for Liverpool since joining from Newcastle United in 2016, when he became one of the first few players brought to the club by Jurgen Klopp.
