Chelsea’s forgotten man Victor Moses stakes recall claim with goal in friendly

Chelsea’s forgotten man Victor Moses flagged himself up to Frank Lampard with a goal in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

The Nigeria winger, who spent last season on loan at Inter Milan and Fenerbahce, was involved as a Blues’ development squad took on AFC Wimbledon at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground.

Moses scored from the spot in the 1-1 draw, in which midfielder Danny Drinkwater also played following loan spells last season at Aston Villa and Burnley.

However, the pair’s contributions would appear unlikely to earn them a return to Lampard’s first team, given the star-studded roster at Stamford Bridge following this summer’s spending splurge.

But they will at least have put themselves in the shop window for loan moves as they look to earn some first-team action for the 2020/21 season.

Chelsea have spent more than £200million so far this summer on the likes of attackers Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

The defence has also been bolstered with left-back Ben Chilwell as well as centre-halves Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.

Tuesday’s friendly against AFC Wimbledon was a chance of some minutes for those players needing to go out on loan this season.

None of the senior first-team players were involved, with the match having taken place the day after Chelsea beat Brighton 3-1 in their Premier League opener.

Moses and Drinkwater are both likely to go out on loan again for the new campaign.

After playing just seven games for Fenerbahce during the first half of the season, Moses enjoyed a better spell at Inter Milan, with the 29-year-old playing 18 games for the Nerazzurri including five during their run to the Europa league final.

Drinkwater, who cost Chelsea £35m back in 2017, hasn’t played for the first team since the 2018 Community Shield.

The 30-year-old began the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Burnley but managed just one Premier League appearance.

And he barely fared better at Villa, playing four league games, with his half-season stint marred by an altercation with team-mate Jota in training.
