Premier League team of the week as Salah joins Willian and Rodriguez

The Premier League is back and Arsenal,Liverpool and Chelsea all picked up opening day wins.

The reigning champions overcame Leeds United in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield, Arsenal ’s new signings put on a show against newly-promoted Fulham, and Chelsea battled to an impressive win at Brighton.

Leicester City and Wolves both picked up wins on the road, as they look to mount another challenge at the top-four.

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham were soundly beaten at home to Everton, while Callum Wilson got off to the perfect start in a win for Newcastle United.

With all that and more in mind, here’s Mirror Football’s Premier League team of the week.

Vicente Guaita (Crystal Palace)

Crystal Palace ended the season with a winless run of nine games, but Roy Hodgson’s men put that to rest with a solid victory at home to Southampton.

Wilfried Zaha got the goal for Palace, but it was Guaita in goal that ensured they would taste victory for just the second time since March.

A stunning save from Che Adams and a vital stop in added-on time ensured Palace picked up all three points.

Timothy Castagne (Leicester City)

Signed to replace Ben Chillwell, the Belgian slotted in effortlessly for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Kept West Brom at bay on their Premier League return and netted the opener himself to cap off an impressive introduction to English football.

Romain Saiss (Wolves)

Wolves wrapped up their win at Sheffield United in just six minutes at Bramall Lane.

Raul Jimenez scored after three minutes, before Saiss effectively sealed all three points with a bullet header just minutes later.

Could have had a hat-trick in the end, with Aaron Ramsdale denying him a second, just minutes after he flashed a header wide.

Produced some brilliant defensive work as well, not least when he denied Oli McBurnie a stoppage time goal by heading his effort off the line.

Gabriel Magalhaes (Arsenal)

After an early bit of miscommunication with Bernd Leno, the Brazilian grew into his Premier League bow in the win over Fulham.

Asserted his aerial dominance from the start, particularly as Fulham mounted a comeback of sorts in the second half.

Used that ability in the air to net Arsenal’s decisive second and while his build-up play can still improve, it was a very impressive first competitive appearance for the £25million man.

Tariq Lamptey (Brighton)

Despite losing to his former club, the Chelsea academy graduate impressed at the Amex Stadium.

Helped the Seagulls defensively and in attack, particularly with his pace in forward areas.

It was his cut back that allowed Leandro Trossard to fire in Brighton’s equaliser in the second half.

James Rodriguez (Everton)

Played the first 45 minutes vs Spurs like he had been in the Premier League for years. Floated around the pitch and furnished his performance with countless clever touches and passes.

Almost scored an opening day goal, but all in all, a performance that will massive excite Carlo Ancelotti and the Everton fans.

Mateusz Klich (Leeds)

They may have ultimately lost 4-3, but Marcelo Bielsa’s side earned admirers for the swashbuckling way they approached the clash with the champions.

Klich in particular stood out, not only shackling Liverpool ’s midfield options, but also providing drive and energy for his side.

Capped his performance with a second half goal, emphatically scoring after a perfectly timed midfield run.

Jeff Hendrick (Newcastle)

Perhaps the most unheralded piece of Newcastle transfer business, but one that could provide them with a valuable splash of quality.

Played out wide in the win over West Ham, the former Burnley midfielder showed his trademark desire off the ball – and his quality on it, producing the ball that saw Callum Wilson open his Magpies account.

Willian (Arsenal)

The second of Arsenal’s summer signings to stand-out in the win at Craven Cottage, Willian created two goals on his debut for the Gunners.

Operating from the right, Willian moved inside to dangerous effect as Arteta’s side put in a hugely impressive performance.

Created Garbiel’s goal from a corner, before playing in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the third.

Really encouraging start from the former Chelsea man.

Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)

Last season’s Golden Boot winner is in the goals already. He had a relatively quiet opening hour at the Hawthorns, before springing to life to coolly convert two penalties in final 30 minutes.

He’s tormented West Brom over the years and continued that tradition, cupping his ears to an empty stand in celebration.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Liverpool were made to work for their first win of the season and without the prolifc Salah, they would likely have been beaten.

Won, and scored the penalty for the opener, netted a second before the break, before emphatically scoring from the spot again in the second half.

Gary Neville has claimed Salah can begin to challenge for the mantle of best player in the world, on this showing, he is right up there.
