Brighton vs Chelsea player ratings as Havertz and Werner show glimpses of class
[ad_1]
Chelsea got their potentially exciting 2020/21 season under way with a hard-fought win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
While all of the attention was on the German pair of Kai Havrtz and Timo Werner as they made their debuts, there were more unlikely goalscorers who caught the eye as Frank Lampard’s side eventually ground down the Seagulls.
Werner won a penalty when he was tripped by Mat Ryan in the first half, with Jorginho rolling home his effort from the spot.
Leandro Trossard then grabbed an equaliser for Brighton as his low effort beat the dive of Kepa Arrizabalaga, only for Reece James to immediately restore Chelsea’s lead with a fine effort.

Here’s how the players rated.
Brighton
Ryan 6
Ryan conceded a penalty on the opener but was left horribly exposed.
Lamptey 8
Strong, determined and drives forward. Gets better every time. Prospect.
White 7
The most sought after centre half of the summer… you can see why.
Dunk 6
Brighton fans always wonder why he doesn’t get an England chance.
Webster 7
Had an excellent season last time, will only get better. Rock solid.
March 7
Played as left wing back, good mix of tenacious defending and overlapping runs.
Alzate 6
Awful mistake on Chelsea ’s first goal. Gifted possession and conceded a penalty.
Bissouma 7
Shields the defence to good effect. Works hard, gets stuck in and is effective.
Lallana 5
Heartbreak on his debut as he went off injured before half time. Had done well.
Trossard 7
Quick feet, good movement. Equalised with a good shot and played well.
Maupay 7
Suffered nasty looking ankle injury after accidental clash with Zouma but battled on.

Struggled defensively but hit a sensational strike and provided assist.
Zouma 7
Provides some power and strength while he was an unlikely goalscorer.
Christensen 6
They still look vulnerable in defence but he does look strong in possession.

Maybe battling for his place will bring out the best in him at left back.
Jorginho 7
Sat deep and ran the midfield. A coolly taken penalty and good vision.
Kanté 7
Works so hard, you can see why he remains such an important figure.
Loftus-Cheek 5
Surprise selection, had a poor game, kept giving the ball away. No belief.
Mount 6
His passing was sloppy. Worked hard but struggled to get going.
Havertz 7
Such a clever player. Nice passing, got things moving and showed his class.

His pace, acceleration and runs really stretched Brighton. Promising debut.
