Man Utd closing in on Sergio Reguilon after Zinedine Zidane decision

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid with talks between the clubs said to be at ‘maximum intensity’.

Reports in Spain suggested United had ramped up their efforts to land the full-back in a £23million deal.

One key stumbling block to an agreement was Madrid’s insistence on putting a buy-back clause in the deal, which United were firmly against.

But as reported on Friday, Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane was happy to be flexible and exclude the clause in order to help push the transfer through.

Since then Marca have claimed talks are at a well advanced stage and United are now in the driving seat to seal Reguilon’s signature.

The 23-year-old has been offered to a number of clubs across Europe this summer following his impressive performances on loan at Sevilla.

Reguilon is deemed surplus to requirements at Madrid as Zidane considers both Marcelo and Ferland Mendy ahead of the 23-year-old in the pecking order.

He was willing to give the green light to the deal without a buy-back option to help keep good relations with United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already brought in Donny van de Beek but Jadon Sancho remains Manchester United’s number one target.

However, they have so far failed to agree a deal with Borussia Dortmund and are considering Gareth Bale as an alternative.

Chelsea and Arsenal both expressed an interest in Reguilon earlier this summer but opted against a move as United have made their swoop.

The Mail report that Tottenham could make a late bid to challenge United for Reguilon’s services, but Old Trafford is considered to be the ideal destination for him to further his career.

Last season Reguilon made 38 appearances for Sevilla, helping them to winning the Europa League.

He was rewarded for his fine form with an international debut for Spain earlier this month.

Reguilon’s signing would solve Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s need for cover at right-back as it would enable Brandon Williams to be back-up on his more natural side.

United chiefs are still hopeful of completing the transfer of Jadon Sancho too but a deal looks increasingly unlikely.

Dortmund are standing firm on their valuation of the winger and have made it clear previously they do not want to let their star man go late in the window for fear of not being able to sign a replacement.
