Liverpool set to make even more money from Coutinho as new plan emerges

Liverpool are set to make even more money from Philippe Coutinho now that Barcelona’s plan for the Brazilian has emerged.

The Reds sold Coutinho to Barcelona back in 2018, receiving £106million up front and the promise of a further £36m in add-ons.

The £36m was to be paid in installments every time Coutinho reached a milestone at Barca, like making 25 appearances or helping the club qualify for the Champions League.

Liverpool have already received the vast majority of this transfer fee, but are still owed a further £4.4m from Barcelona.

Coutinho is just 15 Barca appearances away from triggering the final bonus, but up until now it wasn’t clear if he ever would.

The Brazilian, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, appeared destined to be sold by Barcelona in this summer’s transfer window.

But Coutinho’s agent Kia Joorabchian recently confirmed that his client will be at Barcelona this coming season.

This means that the Brazilian is almost certain to make a further 15 appearances for the Catalan giants, meaning Liverpool will get their final £4.4m.

“I think it was very clear, [Barcelona boss Ronald] Koeman called him right after the Champions League victory with Bayern the following day,” Joorabchian said.

Barcelona agreed to pay Liverpool a total of £142million in transfer fees

“He told him that he is very much in his plans and he would like him to return. He was due to return on September 7, actually.

“But he returned at the beginning of September as he didn’t want to lose his momentum and fitness and he’s been training with Barcelona.

“All signs point that Barcelona have changed, quite dramatically, with their philosophy of how they want to move forward from last year.

“And I think the players they have brought in like Coutinho, [Ousmane] Dembele and [Antoine] Griezmann, they are all going to be part of the squad this year.

“When you are playing for the team you have to do your job and I think he did his job perfectly [in the Champions League].

“It is probably the reason Barcelona want him back so badly.”
