Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez speaks out over Man Utd transfer interest

[ad_1]

Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez has admitted he is “very flattered” by transfer interest from Manchester United.

The Spanish midfielder caught the eye of United scouts last season following his impressive performances in the Champions League.

Niguez was central to his side knocking out European Cup holders Liverpool, even scoring the winner in the home leg.

His form led to reports United were plotting a swoop for his services with the offer of a £150,000-per-week contract until the coronavirus pandemic scuppered any plans.

Asked how he dealt with the speculation, Niguez told Marca : “Well honestly very well.

“I am very flattered that a club like Manchester United or other teams that ask about me take me into consideration, for me it is very positive.

“And that strong people in those clubs speak well of you means that I am doing things well at Atletico Madrid.”

Niguez played 47 times for Atleti last season, scoring seven times across the campaign in all competitions.

However despite admiring glances from United they have since snapped up Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek, and it seems more likely Niguez’s midfield partner Thomas Partey will be the one heading to the Premier League.

Partey was also instrumental in the victory over Liverpool and is a priority target for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Despite eliminating the champions though Atletico failed to get past the quarter finals as they crashed out to Red Bull Leipzig.

Their domestic form also faltered as they finished 17 points behind La Liga winners and local rivals Real Madrid.

But a move seems far from Niguez’s mind at present and he feels Atletico can mount a fresh challenge this coming season.

“At least we have to try and our ambition has to be that, honestly,” he said. “We have a squad, there is a team to compete with the greats and to fight them for the league championship and all the titles, but we have to prove it, we can’t just talk like that.

“It is not saying ‘we want to go, we want to go’, but to show it on the pitch, in training sessions, when we talk to the press – show it in every way and I sincerely think that these coming years are very good for Atletico Madrid.”
