Kevin De Bruyne labels PFA Players’ Player of the Year award “ultimate honour”

Kevin De Bruyne revealed his pride at what he called the “ultimate honour” after he was named PFA Player of the Year.
De Bruyne’s fellow professionals voted the Manchester City midfielder the best player of last season, after he produced a record-equalling 21 assists in the Premier League.
The Belgium playmaker, who scored 16 goals and managed 23 assists in all competitions, also admitted he was surprised to be the first City player to win the prestigious award.
“It’s a huge honour,” said De Bruyne. “To be voted for by your colleagues and competitors from other teams who you play against and then for you to be the best player, is amazing.
“It’s strange that I’m the first one at City, given all the good players that have played here before and who are still playing here, but it’s nice to represent the club.”

“I think it’s the ultimate honour to be nominated by fellow professionals, because you compete against them, they want to win the trophies, they want to be the best.
“When they vote for you, and it’s everyone who is voting, not just a few players, that means you’ve done really well during the season.”
De Bruyne was the Premier League’s stand-out performer last season, despite City finishing 18 points behind champions Liverpool, whose captain Jordan Henderson was voted Footballer of the Year.
Asked if last season was the best of his career, De Bruyne said: “I don’t know. I’ve been playing well, trying to be consistent with good performances.

“I don’t go too much up and down, this is something that happens especially at the beginning of your career. I’m a little bit older now.
“I’m used to what I can do and what I can’t do so I just think I’m helping my team to win games and if you do that then people will vote for you I guess.
“You need to work hard and the team needs to perform well, but then it’s on the pitch, taking care of yourself, finding a routine that settles you outside of football.
“I’m perfectly settled and have found a routine with my family where we’re really comfortable and everyone is happy.
“I think if you’re happy at what you do then it becomes easier and you become more settled.”
Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold beat a plethora of talents to be crowned Young Player of the Year.
The 21-year-old beat Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, Chelsea pair Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount, and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka to the accolade.
Alexander-Arnold broke his own Premier League record from the previous season by laying on 13 assists for his teammates, while also featuring in all 38 games.
The England man also scored four goals from his berth on the right of defence and his achievements were enough to edge his fellow stars-in-the-making to the award.
