Chelsea transfer round-up: Blues close on goalkeeper Mendy, Ampadu a loan target

Chelsea fans can’t be anything but happy with their summer business.
The Blues have added several big names to Frank Lampard’s squad including Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva and most recently Kai Havertz.
It would seem they’re not done there. The need for a new goalkeeper has not gone unnoticed,
Kepa Arrizabalaga was dropped several times last term for Willy Caballero, but neither has established themselves as No 1 and the search continues.
With that in mind here are the latest Chelsea rumours for Monday, September 7.
Chelsea closing in on Ligue 1 goalkeeper
Chelsea are confident they can agree a deal with Rennes for Edouard Mendy, according to The Athletic.
The deal would take the club’s summer business near £250million spent, with the report stating that talks are ‘progressing well’.
Mendy is currently plying his trade with Rennes in Ligue 1, and would likely arrive as a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga as the club’s No1.
The report states the club have had one bid worth £14million rejected by Rennes.
Mendy joined the club from Stade Reims for £3.5million, and he looks set to move again, with the situation described by the Athletic as nearing completion “within days or the next few weeks”.
Chelsea winger set for La Liga medical
Kenedy is set to join Granada on loan for the season, according to David Ornstein.
The 24-year-old joined Chelsea from Fluminense in 2015 but has struggled to establish himself in the first-team at Stamford Bridge. He has taken in loans at Watford, Newcastle and Getafe and will now prepare himself for another spell away from Chelsea.
He remains under contract with the club until 2022, but it looks increasingly unlikely that he has a long-term future at Chelsea.
Granada finished 7th in La Liga last season and will compete in the Europa League this season.
Sheffield United targeting Chelsea youngster
Sheffield United are in talks with Chelsea about a loan move for Ethan Ampadu, according to Sky Sports.
Ampadu, 19, spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig and is ready for greater first-team exposure during the upcoming season.
The Welsh international is able to play in a variety of positions, and Ryan Giggs said it is time the youngster decided whether he wanted to fight for minutes at Chelsea or move on loan to gain greater opportunities.
“I want all the players to be playing regularly, but that sometimes isn’t the case,” said Giggs.
“It’s that balance over whether they’re at a top club and surrounded by top players and improving every day, but ultimately you need minutes on the pitch.

“That’s a decision for Ethan. I’ve talked to him a lot about that. I think last year was maybe a little bit different as he had injuries. You could see from the game he played against Tottenham in the Champions League he was outstanding.
“Nothing fazes him, he’s a quality player, and he just needs to keep fit now.”
