MS Dhoni has already started to think about whom to hand over the captaincy when he decides to step aside from the Indian Premier League, according to his Chennai Super Kings teammate Dwayne Bravo.
Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings to 3 IPL titles and one Champions Trophy triumph since the very beginning in 2008. But with the 39-year-old nearing the end of his professional career, Dhoni has now started to plan out his departure from the T20 league.
“I know it’s been (next CSK captain) in the back of his mind for some time, I mean all of us have to step aside at some point of time. It’s just the matter of when when to step aside and hand it over to whether it’s a Raina or someone younger,” Bravo told ABP News.
Dhoni announced his international retirement on August 15 after a decorated 16-year career with Team India but will continue to play in the IPL. His retirement though, won’t change the way he leads CSK in IPL 2020, said Bravo.
“He doesn’t have to worry about a billion people now, it’s just CSK the franchise but I don’t think that’ll change the person he is, won’t he change how leads the team, definitely he’ll be the same person,” Bravo said.
IPL 2020 is all set to begin from September 19 in the UAE. The 8-team 53-day tournament will be played in a bio-secure bubble this year due to the coronavirus pandemic scare. No fans will be allowed in the three stadiums in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
Bravo, who hailed CSK fans as the most loyal in the IPL, also shed light on this issue.
“Being in a bubble with no fans is sad but we still have to be thankful to at least get the opportunity to play again,” Bravo said.
