Man Utd chiefs divided over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top transfer target

Manchester United are in conflict over whether to pursue a move for RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.

The defender is one of the club’s top targets following another impressive year in Germany.

His performance in the Champions League quarter final win over Atletico Madrid especially caught the eye.

But some United chiefs fear that, at the age of 21, he would benefit from more time in the Bundesliga, reports the Telegraph.

Upamecano has all the traits Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for in a central defender as he eyes a partner for Harry Maguire.

Dayot Upamecano is a man in demand

The Frenchman’s physical attributes would perfectly compliment the United skipper’s ball playing style.

United can seal the defender’s signature for £53m should they be willing to pay his release clause.

His value next summer though will drop to £40m which, some of the Old Trafford hierarchy, believe is a more tempting offer given the player will also have had a further 12 months to improve.

Solskjaer is reluctant to wait however as he knows interest in Upamecano will only continue to grow.

Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have been the most regular pairing at the back

That could mean there is greater competition for his signature in a years time.

United’s recruitment of central defenders has been questionable in recent years – neither Eric Bailly nor Victor Lindelof have truly established themselves in Manchester.

And Upamecano, who only signed a new deal in July, has opened the door to a move elsewhere in the future.

“I extended in Leipzig, because I feel good with my team-mates and my coach. I’m good at Leipzig,” he said.

“It’s true that I’m in great demand. I speak with clubs, but I’m in no rush and we’ll see what happens in the future.”
