Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez engaged in some friendly sledging with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk prior to the Gunners’ penalty shootout victory in Saturday’s Community Shield at Wembley.
The Londoners came out on top 5-4 in the shootout with Reds striker Rhian Brewster missing the only spot-kick, seeing his effort from 12 yards cannon off the crossbar.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the winning penalty for Arsenal, but the process didn’t start perfectly for the Gabonese hitman who lost the coin toss to counterpart Van Dijk.
The Dutchman elected to shoot first, but Martinez immediately tried to put him off.
He asked: “You sure? “Are you sure?”
Aubameyang could be seen trying to hide a smirk as his goalkeeper engaged in mind games, but the smile was there for all to see as he hoisted the Community Shield to seal the Gunners’ second piece of Wembley silverware in a matter of weeks following on from their FA Cup triumph against Chelsea.
Martinez’s future continues to be a point of discussion with the shot-stopper making it clear he is not willing to stay at the Emirates to act as back-up to Bernd Leno.
The Argentine took the No.1 spot after Leno was injured against Brighton following the restart of the 2019-20 season.
