Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot backs Rahul Gandhi as Congress chief ahead of crucial CWC meet

As different voices emerge from within the Congress on whether Sonia Gandhi should continue as the president of the party, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot have weighed in on the issue.

Ashok Gehlot has backed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as the new Congress president, “if in case Sonia Gandhi has made up her mind to not continue as the party chief”.

Referring to a letter sent by a Congress faction to Sonia Gandhi over leadership issues, Ashok Gehlot said: “News of 23 senior most Congress leaders writing a letter to Hon’ble CP is unbelievable and if it is true – it’s very unfortunate was no need to go in media. I strongly believe that Hon’ble CP Smt Sonia Gandhi ji should continue to lead the party at this crucial juncture where the fight is to save the ethos of our Democracy. She has always taken challenges head-on.”

In another tweet, Ashok Gehlot said: “But if she has made up her mind – I believe @RahulGandhi should come ahead and be the Congress President as the country faces the biggest challenge to save our Constitution – Democracy.”

Sachin Pilot, Gehlot’s former Deputy, mentioned that most Congress workers would like to see Rahul Gandhi take over (as the Congress President) and lead the party.

“Mrs Gandhi and Rahul ji have shown what it means to sacrifice for the greater good of the people and the party. Its now time to build consensus and consolidate. Our future is stronger when we’re united. Most Congress workers would like to see Rahul ji take over and lead the party”, Sachin Pilot said.

On the occasion of the 76 birth anniversary of late Rajiv Gandhi on Thursday, Sachin Pilot had visited the Pradesh Congress Committee office in Jaipur and said that the party will again go into elections after 3 years and success will be achieved only if everyone walks together.

“Everyone has to be taken along. The involvement of everyone has to be ensured. The thing is not just about the municipal corporation elections. After 3 years, the party has to again go for elections. Success will be achieved only if everyone walks together. If we fulfil the standards of the people, only then we will win the next election. When we were in the opposition, we were 21. Despite being in the opposition, we won several local elections. We won elections even in the area of then Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje,” Sachin Pilot said.

The clamour over the Congress leadership grows as some Congress leaders, including ex-ministers, have written to party president Sonia Gandhi for the overhaul of the organisational structure and changes to the leadership. The letter was believed to have been written a few weeks ago and sets the stage for a stormy Congress Working Committee meeting on Monday where issues flagged by dissenters are expected to be discussed and debated.

Ahead of the Congress Working Committee meeting on Monday, different voices have emerged within the party with one section comprising sitting MPs and former ministers demanding collective leadership, while another group has sought the return of Rahul Gandhi to the helm.

This comes after Sonia Gandhi, while responding to party colleagues, said that her stint as interim president is complete and she would like to step down from the party president’s post.
