Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was told that he was free to return to England despite having to face a trial on Tuesday over his alleged role in attacking three policemen while on a night out with pals on the Greek island of Mykonos.

It came amid claims the footballer became embroiled in a brawl with rival fans who stabbed his sister, Daisy, in a melee that began with rival fans taunting the star.

Maguire was grilled by a public prosecutor on the neighbouring island of Syros for almost two hours on Saturday morning after spending two nights in a cell there.

At the end of his appearance, he was instructed that he could go home and that his lawyers could represent him when his trial gets underway.

Maguire, who earns £190,000 per week, emerged from court and was whisked into a waiting van. He is expected to cut his holiday short and arrive home on Sunday morning in a private jet.

He is likely to face a dressing down from his club and explain his conduct to officials, which could result in him being stripped of the captaincy.

Ioanna Rotziolou, spokesman for the local police told MailOnline: ‘He is free to go back to England. He can be represented at Tuesday’s trial by an attorney.’

The £85million England international was arrested in Mykonos on Thursday night along with two friends, aged 28 and 29 who have not been named. They were also told that they do not have to appear at Tuesday’s trial and could return home.

According to legal sources, Maguire and his two friends have been charged with aggravated assault and verbal assault. Another charge of attempting to bribe a police officer has been dropped.

The source revealed that two local lawyers who initially represented Maguire had been replaced by two high flying lawyers that have been hired by Manchester United and have flown in from Athens to represent him.

Eyewitnesses told MailOnline that the trouble started in the Fabrika area of Mykanos, which is packed with bars and restaurants.

They claim that a group of drunken British men started baiting Maguire and his team Manchester United and even made references to the 1958 Munich air disaster, when 23 of its players died in a plane crash when returning from a match.

Kafatos, who only wanted to give his last name, a local resident who witnessed the initial fight in Fabrika before police intervened told MailOnline: ‘I’m a big football fan and recognised Harry Maguire, who was with a group of friends. They were making a lot of noise and it appeared that they had had a lot to drink.

‘Another group of British men started abusing them, saying he was a rubbish footballer and played for a rubbish team. They were also calling him a fridge and I didn’t really understand what they meant by that.’

Kafatos added: ‘Then there was a lot of shouting, swearing and they started fighting. It was a real mess. They were throwing punches, kicking each other and rolling around on the ground before the police came.’

Briton Sam Moore said: ‘This group of British lads were out for trouble and were being really abusive towards Maguire and his club.

‘I could hear them singing about the Munich air disaster and saying other vile things. You could tell that they wanted to have a punch up with Maguire. I don’t know what football team they supported but they didn’t like Manchester United, that much was obvious.’

A Manchester United spokesman said: ‘Following the appearance in court today we note the adjournment of the case to allow the legal team to consider the case file.

‘Harry has pleaded not guilty to the charges. It would be inappropriate for the player or club to comment further while the legal process takes its course.’

Local media reports also claim that Maguire allegedly attacked the police officers after his younger sister was stabbed in the arm.

Maguire, a father-of-two, was seen yesterday evening being taken into Syros police station by plain-clothes officers after an hour-long ferry crossing to his new jail cell with the two other men.

Police said that two of their officers suffered facial injuries during the initial scrap after they were allegedly hurled to the ground, punched and kicked.

In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, Mykonos police accused the three men of another violent altercation once they had been taken into custody. On arrival to Mykonos police station, according to the statement, the men continued to resist, ‘pushing and beating three police officers’.

The statement also said that ‘one of the detainees tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed’ but did not name Maguire.

Police have said that two groups of Englishmen were brawling outside Mykonos’ Fabrica bar in the early hours of Friday morning and when they tried to intervene they were rounded on by three men, including the centre-half.

‘When the brawl was all sorted out, one of the two groups – with the football players – started verbally abusing officers. There were several policemen there.
