ISRO espionage scandal: 2 months jail without trial, called traitor, career destroyed … Scientist Nambi Narayanan gets compensation of 1.30 crore

The Kerala government on Tuesday paid additional compensation of Rs 1.30 crore to former Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) scientist Nambi Narayanan to settle the two-and-a-half-decade-old espionage case in which he was implicated by the state police. Let us know that in December last year, the Kerala State Cabinet had approved the compensation of Rs 1.30 crore to former ISRO scientist S. Nambi Narayanan.

In fact, the case was registered following a Supreme Court order in 2018 in the Sessions Court at Thiruvananthapuram by former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan (79). The Supreme Court, in its order, said that his arrest in this case was ‘unnecessary’ and he was implicated. Also, the Supreme Court had ordered an interim relief of Rs 50 lakh. The Supreme Court had also said that Nambi Narayanan deserves more than this and they can approach the lower court for fair compensation. Earlier, the National Human Rights Commission also ordered a relief of Rs 10 lakh to him.

After the order of the Supreme Court, the Kerala government, former Chief Secretary K.K. Jayakumar was asked to look into the matter and fix an exact compensation amount and settle the case. His suggestions were subsequently presented before the court and an agreement was reached.

Accepting the check of compensation amount by Kerala government, Nambi Narayanan said that I am happy. This fight is not only for the money I fight. My fight was against injustice.

The ISRO espionage case relates to allegations of transfer of certain confidential documents and secret of the county’s cryogenic engine technology to enemy countries by two scientists and four others, including two Maldivian women. In 1994, two alleged Maldives women intelligence officers were accused of leaking secret information related to the Defense Department against Nambi Narayanan. Narayan was also arrested in this case.

The Supreme Court, in its order, also said that Narayanan was tortured a lot. Not only this, they were called traitors of the country for years until they got justice and proved innocent. This speaker was quite hot. Many books were written about the ISRO espionage case. Narayanan was awarded the Padma Bhushan last year.

According to Narayanan, his aide and late former President APJ Abdul Kalam advised him to refrain from trial after the charges were dropped. But he was firm on the decision to punish the guilty and get compensation. It is said that this episode was the result of political tussle. On this issue, a section of the Congress targeted Karunakaran of the then Chief Minister. Due to this, he later had to resign from his post.

ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan had to face punishment and torture for a crime that never happened. The Kerala police arrested him for stealing documents related to the project of rocket’s cryogenic engine to Pakistan via Maldives. Whereas the truth was that that technology did not exist.
