Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is the story of the first woman pilot of our Air Force who also participated in the war. During the Kargil war in 1999, soldiers were brought arms and logistics, transported wounded soldiers from the battlefield to the camps, found the hideouts of Pakistani terrorists and soldiers on the icy high mountains and reported to their army. But this film tells the story of Gunju (Jahnavi Kapoor) less and is more interested in exposing the mentality of feudal minded men of the society. Whether this thinking is as Gunjan’s brother (Angad Bedi) or as Air Force staff-officers. An officer (Vineet Kumar) tells Gunjan clearly that our responsibility is to protect this country, not to give you a chance to equalize. In 2020, it is the talk of the 1990s. Time has changed and today there are 1625 working women officers in the Air Force.

Director Sharan Sharma did not put the merits of Gunjan’s character and his struggles in the focus of this biopic. He increased the scope of the story from personal to social. He gave an important place to his father and sensitive chief officer in Gunjan’s story. While the other end of it is tied with brother and anti-female mentality colleagues opposing Gunjan’s entry into the Air Force. In this way, the story of Gunjan swings between the two ends. It would have been better here had the director shown Gunjan’s activism and bravery in more detail in the Kargil war. Failing this, the big plank of Gunjan’s story has been confined here. The writer-director has taken considerable cinematic leeway here. More research could have made the film stronger.

It turns out that the opening scene of Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl begins with a double dialogue. In the group of jawans patrolling in Kargil valley, one tells his partner that we will roam around in the legs or we will also run them. Then his partner, pointing to the leader in front, says, ‘Dayal Ji’s memory also says that you will keep moving or fire with a gun.’ It is also worth noting that in the opening credits, Gunjan and his brother have thanked their mother (Mrs. Kirti Saxena) for her story: Mother, this story begins with you and is because of you (mother, this story begins with you And it is only because of you). But the filmmakers, taking cinematic relaxation in the biopic, have described the mother’s character as discouraging. In the film, the mother is constantly standing against Gunjan’s dreams and disappears from the story in between.

Sharan Sharma’s Gunjan Saxena: The story of The Kargil Girl joins the national call of today’s Beti Padhao-Beti Badhao. This can also be felt in the song and music of the film. Here Gunjan (Jahnavi Kapoor )’s retired colonel father (Pankaj Tripathi) always emboldens the daughter’s dream of flying in the sky and at least he has emerged as the strongest character in the film. Pankaj Tripathi is a brilliant actor and he has left a deep impression in every scene while speaking with a special voice in a slow voice. His dialogue is easily remembered by ‘those who never leave hard work, luck does not leave their hands’.

Jahnavi Kapoor is seen working hard for the role of Gunjan Saxena. His father-daughter scenes with Pankaj Tripathi are beautiful. While the scene of Jahnavi’s entry at the beginning of the film comes at a good turn. This is Sharan Sharma’s first film as an independent director and he has made this film in the tradition of Dharma Productions and for Jahnavi Kapoor. Nikhil Malhotra and Sharan Sharma have written the film together and it needed research. Pankaj Tripathi is a strong link to Gunjan Saxena. Vineet Kumar’s acting is effective and other actors have also played their roles spontaneously. This is the second film after Jahnavi Kapoor’s Dhadak in 2018, in which she is trying to establish her feet. She has been seen working hard in both films and now she needs luck.
