Ivanka Trump wears her favorite floral dress to attend human trafficking event and announce $35 million grants for survivors – after joining her father at a White House conservation event

Ivanka Trump spoke out against human trafficking on Tuesday, calling it the ‘gravest of human rights violations,’ while celebrating the Trump administration’s pledge to issue more than $35 million in grants to survivors. 

The 38-year-old White House senior adviser joined Attorney General William Barr in hosting a roundtable discussion about the Housing Assistance Grants for Victims of Human Trafficking in the Indian Treaty Room of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C. 

Ivanka looked elegant in a floral number by Andrew Gn that features billowing sleeves and a matching belt with an intricate buckle. She wore the frock a number of times last year, including her speech at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in the Netherlands.

The pre-fall 2018 look sold out shortly after it debuted, but a similar dress by the designer is currently retailing for $2,512. 

For her day of appearances, Ivanka wore her blonde hair center-parted and flat ironed poker-straight, one of her signature looks.  

The human trafficking event was attended by other administration officials, survivors of human trafficking, and organizations that serve them. 

‘In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, combating human trafficking in the U.S. and abroad is critical work,’ Ivanka said in a statement. ‘DOJ’s grant recipients are on the frontlines of this fight, ensuring that survivors across our country are afforded safe and stable housing and empowered with the support and resources they need to rebuild their lives.

All together: The event took place in the Indian Treaty Room of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C.

Participants began filing into the Indian Treaty Room wearing masks around 1:45 p.m. Ivanka and Barr arrived 15 minutes later. 

The group sat at a horseshoe-shaped table, a little less than six feet apart, with Ivanka, Barr, Jordan Community Resource Center founder and President Tenisha Gant-Watson, and U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking member Tanya Gould in the middle.

In his opening remarks, Barr called human trafficking an ‘evil scourge’ and thanked Ivanka, the president, and all of the participants for their work to end human trafficking and help survivors.

He went on to announce the Department of Justice’s Housing Assistance Grants for Victims of Human Trafficking. 

The $35 million in grants will be issued to 73 organizations across 33 states to house victims of human trafficking. The program is the ‘largest federal investment of its kind.’

Barr added that the ‘trauma’ of trafficking can lead to homelessness and victims unfortunately falling prey to traffickers again.

He stated that in addition to financial support, the Justine Department will do everything in its power to ‘investigate, prosecute, and punish’ traffickers. 

Camillus House Inc. in Miami, Alternatives for Girls in Detroit, and the Jordan Community Resource Center in Shaker Heights, Ohio, are among the organizations sharing the grants. 

When it was Ivanka’s turn to speak, she thanked the attorney general for his work on the issue. She called human trafficking the ‘gravest of human rights violations’ and said ‘this government is prioritizing and putting funds’ where it matters, noting several actions her father has taken to combat trafficking.

She said the event is a ‘celebration’ of the work the administration and participants have done to take on trafficking and an opportunity to hear personal stories from victims present at the event.

Barr was visibly emotional with a hand partially covering his face while listening to testimonials from representatives, including one victim who is affiliated with the Jordan Center.  

The survivor said she was trafficked as a young adult and was repeatedly raped, but she has since earned an associate’s degree and serves as a peer advisor to younger victims of trafficking. She said she was incredibly thankful for her second chance. 

At the end of the discussion, Ivanka told participants that they represent a ‘beacon of hope for so many,’ while reiterating that the Trump administration is ‘fully committed’ to ending human trafficking.    

The event comes just a few weeks after President Trump faced backlash for wishing accused child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell ‘well.’ 

In an interview with Axios on HBO that aired on Monday evening, Trump said he doesn’t want her to die in jail like her former boyfriend Jeffrey Epstein.   

When Trump was asked why he wished her well after she was arrested on allegations of child sex trafficking, he said, ‘Well, first of all, you don’t know that.’ He then doubled-down on his comment.

‘Her friend or boyfriend [Epstein] was either killed or committed suicide. She’s now in jail. Yeah, I wish her well,’ he said. ‘I’d wish you well. I’d wish a lot of people well. Good luck. Let them prove somebody was guilty.’

Trump’s eldest daughter has made human trafficking one of her issue areas and compared it to ‘modern-day slavery’ during a trip to Atlanta in January to visit nonprofit groups that help victims.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ivanka joined her father in the East Room of the White House for a signing ceremony for ‘The Great American Outdoors Act,’ which has been heralded the single largest conservation legislation since the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. 

‘The legislation will provide $900 million a year in permanent funding to the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), and will allocate $9.5 billion over five years to restore facilities and infrastructure in our national parks and public lands,’ according to the White House.  

Ivanka was seen wearing a protective face mask while talking to other attendees ahead of her father’s arrival. She later removed the mask to take the stage and address the audience at the event.
