On 27 July 2011, during its 65th Session, the United Nations General Assembly declared 30 July as “International Day of Friendship”. This declaration has a wide following in parts of South America and in South-Asian nations such as India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Some friends acknowledge each other with exchanges of gifts and cards on this day, using the day to foster friendship bonds. But in places such as India, more than 30 July, it is the first Sunday of August that has gained precedence to be observed as Friendship Day or International Day of Friendship.
There have been allegations that the day is a merely commercial exercise, meant to benefit sales of goods, items, and cards that sell like hotcakes on this day. The reason for this theory is that the first proposal to have a day allocated to the celebration of friendship came in 1930 from Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards who wanted 2 August to be the day when people celebrated their friendships by holiday celebrations.
There was initially a customer resistance as they thought that it was too obviously a commercial gimmick to promote greetings cards. While the sales of Friendship Day cards available in the US dwindled and Europe did not readily buy into the idea, it was majorly the Asian countries that kept the idea afloat and alive.
