19-year-old girl, youngest child in a family, eloped with her neighbour, who is not only married but has got grandchildren too, in Gujarat, the girl’s family alleged. The family has even approached the Gujarat high court over the matter.

The family, belonging to from a village in Sidhpur taluka of Patan district, moved the High Court in June after their efforts to lodge an FIR against the quadragenarian man, did not yield any result.

According to a Times of India reportthe 19-year-old girl’s brother filed a habeas corpus petition complaining that the police took the case very casually even as the family feared that the teenager was forcibly abducted and detained by their neighbour, Shovanji Thakor.

On June 22, during the hearing, petitioner’s advocate reiterated the family members’ tensions and submitted that Thakor’s eldest daughter is married and has children too.

The advocate urged the court to have the police bring the teenager back and produce her before the court, freeing her from the man whose daughter is older than the teenage girl he has allegedly abducted.

The police reportedly did not register an FIR against the man for kidnapping

The lawyer told the High Court that after the teen’s disappearance on June 2, the family came to know about the possibility that Thakor might have abducted her. The family members approached the police, who took three days to file a complaint about the missing girl. The police did not register FIR against Thakor for kidnapping as the girl was not a minor, ToI reported.

When the petition was filed, the family said they fear that the girl’s life might be in danger or she might be sexually abused. The allegations led the high court to order the police to present the girl before it through video-conferencing on June 29.

In the next hearing, police briefed the High Court of the efforts undertaken to trace the girl. The state government wanted more time to trace the girl. The court has granted time till July 13 and directed the police to produce the girl through video conferencing from a nearby court.

The High Court has asked the Patan Superintendent of Police (SP) to be present during the video conferencing with an Action Taken Report (ATR) in case the corpus is not found by July 13.
