Shocker to Sharjil Imam – Delhi High Court refuses to grant bail

Two days before the completion of 90 days, Delhi Police had asked for 3 months more time to complete the investigation against accused Sharijil Imam in Saket court, which was allowed by the court. This order was challenged by Sharjeel Imam in Delhi High Court and sought bail.

Sharjil Imam, a former JNU student and accused of treason, has received a major setback from the Delhi High Court. The Delhi High Court has refused to grant bail to Sharjeel Imam. At the same time, the decision of Saket Court of Delhi has been upheld. The Saket court gave the Delhi Police 90 more days to complete the investigation in the case registered under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against Sharjeel Imam.

Two days before the completion of 90 days, Delhi Police had asked for 3 months more time to complete the investigation in Saket Court, which was allowed by the court. The same order of the lower court was challenged by Sharjeel Imam in the Delhi High Court and sought bail. The Delhi Police has got 6 months to investigate the case after the High Court dismissed the petition of Sharjeel Imam. Although given to the Delhi Police for investigation, the time of 6 months is ending in the last week of July.

The Delhi High Court said in its order that there are serious allegations against Sharjeel Imam in this case and the police investigation has not been completed at the moment. In such a situation, the Sharjil Imam cannot be granted bail before the filing of the charge sheet. After the petition was dismissed, now treason accused Sharjil Imam will not be able to get bail before the charge sheet is filed. Police arrested Sharjeel Imam on 28 January.

Let us tell you that Sharjeel Imam is accused of giving inflammatory speech during protests against CAA and NRC. Along with the police of many states, Delhi Police is also investigating in this matter. Sharajeet Imam is under trial in this case under UAPA.

On June 25, the Delhi High Court had secured the verdict on the petition of Sharjit Imam, accused of sedition and an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University. Sharjil Imam has challenged the order of Saket Court on 25 April 2020 in the Delhi High Court, giving the police more time to investigate the case.
