OnePlus has promised to issue a fix for its Color Filter lens on the OnePlus 8 Pro. The lens was found to be able to see through plastic and other thin surfaces like clothes.
Is it a bug or a feature? Users wondered. Now we know. OnePlus considers it a bug. The OnePlus 8 Pro camera with its special colour filter sensor can in certain conditions look through plastic and other thin surfaces like clothes. The news led to some interesting observations and photos by users, as well as highlighted a few privacy concerns. Now, OnePlus is saying that it will soon issue an update that will likely fix this “bug” in the OnePlus 8 Pro camera.
After OnePlus 8 Pro started reaching consumers some users found that the OnePlus 8 Pro Color Filter lens could see through some objects and even clothes when photo was clicked using Photochrom mode. This didn’t happen all the time, only in certain specific conditions.
While the company had initially remained mum on such reports, it has now taken to Weibo to confirm the news by informing users of its decision to temporarily disable this new 5-megapixel Color Filter camera in the future via a software update. The company has reportedly apologised for this oversight on its part and clarified that the update to disable the lens will be rolled out within a week.
The update is initially scheduled to be released in China and is then expected to be rolled out to global users. The company has said that this is a temporary measure, and has promised to ensure user privacy concerns are addressed before the color filter camera is re-enabled on future OnePlus 8 Pro units.

For the uninitiated, this Color Filter lens was being sold as a unique was of clicking some really stunning shots with false-color camera filters on them. However, later it was found this lens could also be used for infrared photography and also seeing through some thin plastics and thin clothing, like a t-shirt.
As AndroidPIT explained in one of its previous posts, the Color Filter lens is able to see through certain surfaces because it is sensitive to IR light and can catch light that’s outside the visible spectrum. This is unlike normal cameras that have an IR filter that blocks light outside the visible spectrum.
