Jamia Violence : UAPA imposed on Sharjeel accused of Jamia violence case

Charges against Sharia Imam, accused of inciting violence through his speech during a violent protest in December last year near Jamia Millia Islamia of Delhi against CAA, were added under Section 13 of the UAPA. Earlier, the police had registered a charge of treason against Sharjeel. He was charged with causing violence, giving hate speech.
Additional spokesperson of Delhi Police Anil Mittal said that he has been arrested in two cases of violence in Jamia on 13 and 15 December 2019. He has been accused of inciting violence through his December 13 speech. Based on the evidence collected, sections 124A and 153A of the IPC have also been imposed. In its supplementary charge sheet, the police said that violence erupted against the CAA as a result of a protest march organized by Jamia students on December 15 last year.
In its final report filed in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, the police have said that the mob committed massive violence during which many public and private property were destroyed, while many policemen were also injured.

In this connection, cases were registered in New Friends Colony and Jamia Nagar Police Station. Sharjeel was arrested from Jehanabad district of Bihar on January 28. Delhi Police has also registered a case against him for making inflammatory speeches in the Jamia campus. A case has been registered against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act in Assam. Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh have also filed FIRs against him. In fact, he had allegedly threatened to separate Assam and the rest of the Northeast from the country.
