Uddhav Thackeray to become MLC from Governor’s quota? Crisis of Chief Minister’s chair can be averted

In view of the constitutional crisis of Maharashtra, a cabinet meeting was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. After this, the cabinet has sent his name to the Governor to nominate Uddhav Thackeray as MLC. In this way, the decision of Uddhav Thackeray’s chair is in the court of Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

A cabinet meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday to save Uddhav Thackeray’s chief ministerial chair in crisis due to Corona virus. In which Uddhav Thackeray’s name has been recommended from Governor Kota to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. However, it remains to be seen whether the governor stamps the name of Uddhav Thackeray sent by the government or not?

Significantly, aajtak.in had told two days ago that due to the corona virus and lockdown, a constitutional crisis in Maharashtra could come, Uddhav Thackeray has only two options. Today, the Maharashtra government has adopted one of those options. Under this option, the cabinet has sent the Governor to the Governor to nominate Uddhav Thackeray’s name for MLC. In this way, the decision of Uddhav Thackeray’s chair is in the court of Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

Uddhav Thackeray was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 28 November 2019. At that time, he was not a member of any House in Maharashtra. According to Article 164 (4) of the Constitution, Uddhav Thackeray is mandatory to be a member of any House of the state in 6 months. In such a situation, Uddhav Thackeray is required to become a member of the Legislature before May 28 to preserve his Chief Minister’s chair.

The term of 9 members of Maharashtra Legislative Council ends on 24 April. Elections were to be held in these 9 Legislative Council seats, which the Central Election Commission has decided to pursue indefinitely. Uddhav Thackeray was likely to contest in one of these 9 Legislative Council seats, but the constitutional crisis has arisen after the election was postponed due to Corona. Due to this, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar held a cabinet meeting and recommended Governor Kota to nominate Uddhav Thackeray as MLC.

Nawab Malik, a minister in the Maharashtra government, said that the election of MLC has been postponed due to Corona virus. The Maharashtra Cabinet has met and recommended to immediately nominate Uddhav Thackeray’s name in one of the vacant two MLC seats of Governor Kota. However, that is why Uddhav Thackeray has avoided attending the meeting of Cabinte.

If Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari agrees to the name sent by the Maharashtra government, Uddhav Thackeray can succeed in saving his CM chair. At the same time, if the Governor returns Uddhav Thackeray’s name, then he will have no other option but to resign. Only a non-political person is elected to MLC from the Governor quota.
