Wisden Award / Stokes ends Kohli’s dominance, won Leading Cricketer of the Year , 15 years later, an England player gets this honor
England all-rounder Ben Stokes was elected Wisden Leading Cricketer of the Year for 2019, ending the 3-year reign of Indian captain Virat Kohli. After 15 years an England player received this honor. The last time Wisden selected Andrew Flintoff was the Cricketer of the Year in 2005. Kohli was elected Leading Cricketer of the Year for three consecutive years in 2016, 2017 and 2018. However, this time no Indian has got a place in this list.
The 28-year-old Stokes played a key role in England’s ODI World Cup victory in 2019. Stokes’s unbeaten 135 helped England beat Australia by one wicket in the third Ashes Test at Headingley. Stokes scored 821 in Tests in 2019, while 719 runs in ODIs.
Three players from Australia received the honor
Among the women, this honor was awarded to Alyssa Parry of Australia. Parry also featured in Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year. Parry also scored the most runs in Australia’s Ashes series win against England last year with the highest number of runs. She was also named the best female cricketer of the year in 2016. Parry is one of three Australian cricketers included in this list. Apart from him, Marnus Labushane, Pat Cummins have also been selected as the best player by Wisden.
Cummins took the highest 59 wickets in the Test in 2019.
