Spreading fake news or messages is a punishable offense: Ministry of Home Affairs

New Delhi. Taking seriously the fake news and messages going viral on social media regarding the Corona epidemic, the Union Home Ministry has said that it is a punishable offense and action will be taken against the culprits as per law.

In a tweet issued by its cyber security department, the Home Ministry has said that fake, unconfirmed and misleading messages are being viral on WhatsApp, Twitter, Tick Talk and other social media platforms regarding the corona epidemic. We have to be careful and do not believe in them and stop spreading them.

The ministry has said that a person who spreads fake messages or news can be punished according to the law. If you have any doubt about the authenticity of any message, first confirm its authenticity.

To find out the veracity of the viral message, the government’s information office can be contacted on Twitter handle ‘PIBfACTCHECK or WhatsApp number 91 8799711259. The Ministry has also said that if a person comes to know of any such message or fake news that can spread communal violence, then the police should be informed about it.
