Shaheen Bagh opens road for Hindu funeral procession, wins hearts
Anti-CAA protestors at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh on Sunday won hearts of several when they opened a road at the venue to let a Hindu funeral procession pass
Anti-CAA protestors at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh on Sunday won hearts of several when they opened a road at the venue to let a Hindu funeral procession pass.
Speaking on the issue, a protestor said, “We respect each other and by allowing the procession to pass through, we have not done anything unusual. We have allowed buses and ambulances also.”
Shaheen Bagh had been a major talking point in the national capital ahead of the assembly elections. The BJP raked up the issue several times. BJP MP Parvesh Verma stirred up a controversy when he said that people from Shaheen Bagh could rape and murder if they are allowed to go on unhindered and sought votes on the same.
He also said that if the BJP was voted to power, then Shaheen Bagh would be cleared within an hour.
He was also issued a notice by the Election commission for his comments.
Incidents of violence also took place at Shaheen Bagh. Fews days back, a woman reporting wearing a burqa was caught at the venue, when she was trying to make videos.
The women of Shaheen Bagh became suspicious of the burqa-clad woman while she was filming the protest. They caught hold of the reporter and shouted at her, which is when Delhi Police came to her rescue and escorted her out of the site.
Several videos of Gunja Kapoor, who runs a YouTube channel ‘Right Narrative’ and is also a journalist associated with an online magazine, have gone viral on social media.
On February 1, Kapil Gujjar, a 25-year-old resident of a village in the outskirts of Delhi bordering Noida, had shot twice in the air near the Shaheen Bagh protest site. After firing the shots he had told media that no one but Hindus will get what they want in this nation.
In his initial statement, he had said that he was annoyed at protesters because the road closed by them caused long traffic jams. He said that he had to endure these jams frequently while going to Lajpat Nagar for shopping for an upcoming family wedding.
Shaheen Bagh is at the centre of several controversies over the past several weeks. Women of Shaheen Bagh have been protesting for over 50 days against the Citizenship Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register.
