Delhi: Railway Board’s plan to give New Delhi railway station, a world class makeover

  1. Railway Board can bring ‘Expression of Interest’ for re-development of this station in three months.
  2. Its makeover is planned through Public Private Partnership (PPP).

New Delhi: In view of the increasing pressure on the trains and passenger pressure at the New Delhi Railway Station, the Railway Board has plans to reverse it through Public Private Partnership (PPP). So that even after increasing the number of passengers, new trains can be run. New platforms may be re-created for business at stations for additional income. A Railway Board official said that the Railway Board is considering to bring an Expression of Interest in the next three months to break up the station and make it new.

For this, the station development corporation has been asked to seek cooperation from private companies on the basis of PPP model for re-development of New Delhi railway station. New Delhi railway station is connected to 867 stations across the country. It receives 5.50-6 lakh passengers daily. Presently there are 16 platforms at New Delhi station and two major gates towards Paharganj and New Ajmeri Gate. New Delhi railway station was built in 1926 by the East India Company.

The New Delhi Railway Station was first developed in 2007 for the Commonwealth Game in India in 2010. Meanwhile, the Ring Railway was constructed and connected to New Delhi. In 1926, 20-25 trains and four to five thousand people used to come from this station. Today 354 trains run daily from here and 5.50-6 lakh passengers daily. It has got its name registered in the world’s largest interlocking network station.
