Tennis / Sania win 42nd doubles title, beat Chinese duo with Nadia in final of Hobart International tournament

Sania Mirza, who returned to the tennis court after 2 years, won the doubles title of the Hobart International Tennis Tournament on Saturday. Sania beat China’s Zhang and Pang Shuai 6-4, 6-4 with Nadia Kitchennock of Ukraine. The match lasted for an hour and 21 minutes. This is the 42nd WTA doubles title of Sania’s career. He first won the Brisbane International tournament in 2007 with America Partner’s Bathany Mattek-Sands.

The Sania-Nadia duo got Rs 9.65 lakh as prize money. With this win, they also gained 280 ranking points. They defeated Tamara Zidanacek of Slovenia and Marie Buzkova of Czech Republic 7-6 (3), 6–2 in straight sets in the semi-finals of this tournament.

Sania will play Australia Open

Sania will also compete in mixed doubles with Rajiv Ram of America at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, this month. The tournament will be played in Melbourne from 20 January to 2 February. Sania was included in India’s Fed Cup team in December. The tournament will be played in Hungary in April. Sania last played the Fed Cup in 2016.

Six-time Grand Slam winner Sania has been the No. 1 player in the doubles rankings for 91 weeks. He last played the tournament in 2017. She was then eliminated in the semi-finals of the China Open. This Indian player has the best single ranking of 27, which he achieved in 2007.
