May move court seeking FIR against Delhi Police over brutality on campus: Jamia V-C after students gherao office
Islamia (JMI) students gheraoed Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar’s office, the vice-chancellor said the university might be moving the court for the registration of an FIR over the police “brutality” on the campus on December 15.
In a statement, V-C Najma Akhtar maintained that the university has followed all the possible steps for the registration of an FIR against the cops over the December 15 incident.
Jamia V-C’s statement came after the students of Jamia Millia Islamia students barged into the office premises after breaking the lock on the main gate and raised slogans against the V-C, demanding the registration of an FIR against the Delhi Police in connection with last month’s violence on the campus.
Najma Akhtar also tried to pacify the students and said attempts were being made to file an FIR but it has not been registered yet.
“A decision has also been taken that the administration will also explore the possibility of moving court for the registration of FIR in the 15th December 2019 police brutality in university library case at the earliest,” an official statement said.
“The university has already followed all possible steps for the registration of FIR. It has given its complaint to SHO Jamia Nagar and its copy to CP Delhi and DCP South East. University has also written letters to Joint CP Southern Range and DCP Crime for the registration of FIR earlier,” the statement read.
Among other demands, the students also demanded the university to reschedule examinations and ensure the security of students.
On the demand of the protesting students, V-C Najma Akhtar in consultation with the Deans, HoDs and other officials announced that the “ongoing semester exams stand cancelled till further notice”. The new schedule of the exams will be declared later.
Najma Akhtar said she has raised the matter with the government and has also sought legal course in the matter. She said security has been doubled on the campus.
The National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) has begun the inquiry into the police action against the students. The university has handed over all the evidence to the NHRC.
